WEBSITE NEWS. We now have the National Inventory back on the web. It can
be reached via a link from the www.camra.org.uk
site or directly at www.heritagepubs.org.uk
It’s easy to use and find your way around. You’ll find the NI under ‘The
Pub Inventories’. Special thanks to Andy Shaw for setting it up and to
Julian Tubbs for his hard work in rounding up information.
NI CHANGES: UP-DATE/CORRECTIONS
In my last bulletin I did not do my job as well as I might, so please
note (thanks to Mick Slaughter):
LONGACRE TAVERN, LONDON ROAD, BATH, BT1 5NL. Added to Part One. A
remarkable survivor of c.1960 with typical detail of the time. Not
lovely but certainly interesting. Be warned, though – beautiful Bath has
some salubrious parts. This area is not one of them.
KING’S HEAD, BOOTLE, CUMBRIA. Added to Part Two for its. The interest is the survival of the 'bar' in its original form as a private room from which drink was served and in which valuables were kept.
PHEASANT, BASSENTHWAITE. The address is strictly speaking Bassenthwaite Lake and the postcode is CA13 9YE.
FIDDICHSIDE INN, CRAIGELLACHIE, MORAY. This wonderful gem is open all day Sunday and well as all day Saturday.
FREW’S BAR, DUNDEE. The best Art Deco room is actually called the ‘Sporting Memories Lounge’ and is open Fri nights and on Sats.
PRINCESS LOUISE, HOLBORN, LONDON. Amazing news here. Sam Smiths, after
lengthy discussions with English Heritage, are going ahead with plans to
put back the Victorian screenwork that was removed decades ago. It’s a
truly heroic thing to do and follows on from other extraordinary
historicizing schemes by this secretive Yorkshire brewer (such as the
glittering interior at the Crown & Sugar Loaf just off the bottom of
Fleet Street on the right-hand side). The pub has recently closed to
allow the work to take place and reopening is scheduled for November.
VINE, WEDNESFIELD, W. MIDS. The reopening anticipated in the January
bulletin has taken place and Angela and John Tune report the pub seems
in good hands and a first-class place for a drink. Visits recommended.
BARLEY MOW, LONDON W1. Several people have given the highly disagreeable
news that this pub is currently shut. This is the one with a unique pair
of tiny drinking boxes attached to the counter.
RED LION, HANDSWORTH, BIRMINGHAM. I have had a report that this
wonderful pub may be closed. Does anyone have any firm information?
