Update Bulletin ref: 085 - February 2010
At its meeting last Saturday CAMRA’s Pub Heritage Group agreed the addition of a new pub to Part One:
LINCOLNSHIRE, BERKELEY, Doncaster Road, Scunthorpe DN15 7DS. 01724 842333
A large brick roadhouse-cum-hotel and opened in 1940. Three rooms plus a ballroom. As one would expect from the date the architcetrure and fittings are relatively plain but the remarkable thing is the survival of the multiple rooms. Sam Smiths who own it did a refurbishment a few years back but this was largely cosmetic. It still has accommodation on offer. See the entry on the Heritage Pubs web site.
Hard on the heels of last month’s announcements of some new statutory listing there’s another one for the Part Two:
TYNE & WEAR, STAG’S HEAD, South Shields.
The chief reason for listing of this 1897 pub is the highly unusual two-storey arrangement with original serveries on both levels. You can read more about this pub and its unusual design on our website. See the entry on the Heritage Pubs web site.
LICENSED TO SELL: THE HISTORY AND HERITAGE OF THE PUBLIC HOUSE
Many (hopefully all) of you will have a copy of this book which Andrew Davison, Mick Slaughter and I produced in 2004 and was published by English Heritage in association with CAMRA. It’s been one of EH’s best sellers and they are proposing to bring out a new edition next year. If you know of any errors or facts that need updating, do let me know at g.brandwood@virgin.net.
