New listings:
More good news on the historic pub protection front - two more of our Part One National Inventory gems have been granted statutory listing at Grade II.
LONDON, W8 KENSINGTON, WINDSOR CASTLE, 114 Campden Hill Road, London, W8 7AR. 020 7243 9551
A most interesting, intact refurbishment of about 1933, still very much in the Victorian mode with screens separating the different rooms. A remarkable thing is the plaque in the ‘Sherry Bar’ explaining when the oak used in that room was felled. See the entry on the Heritage Pubs web site.
LIVERPOOL, WATERLOO, VOLUNTEEER CANTEEN, 45 East Street, Waterloo, Liverpool, L22 8QR. 0151 928 6594.
Listed for its little altered interior dating from 1924 by brewers, Higsons. In the room left of the corridor you can still get table service (certainly a year or two ago you could), a survival of the way drinks were often served in the ‘better’ rooms of pubs in former times (which explains when you sometimes find bell-pushes to attract attention). See the entry on the Heritage Pubs web site.
Other news:
LEEDS, GARDEN GATE, 3 Whitfield Place, Hunslet, Leeds LS10 2QB. 0113 270 0379.
According to the Yorkshire Evening Post "Talks have been held between council chiefs and Leeds Brewery bosses over the future of one of the city's most historic pubs." (See full article). The Garden Gate pub was put on the market by owners Punch Taverns last year. Apparently Leeds Brewery are interested acquiring the pub. If you don't know this pub, a visit is highly recommended. Not only does it retain its 1903 layout but it has a fantastic set of pub fittings - etched glass, glazed and timber screens, and, as you can see in the picture, mosaic flooring and a wonderful ceramic bar counter. It really is in the top flight of pubs with interiors of about 1900. See the entry on the Heritage Pubs web site.
Other news:
WORCESTER, PAUL PRY
After a lengthy period of closure this fine pub of around 1900 has reopened but as a restaurant. So while its extensive fittings have been preserved, it can no longer be classed as a pub, and therefore it has been removed from our list for the moment.
