CHANGES TO THE NATIONAL INVENTORY OF HISTORIC PUB INTERIORS
The following additions to Part Two were agreed by CAMRA’s Pub Heritage Group on 12 June:
|
CHESHIRE, HASLINGTON, HAWK, 137 Crewe Road, CW1 5RG. 01270 252000. Added to Part Two for is wonderful back room which is lined with a tremendous display of old panelling, probably from the early 17th century. In research undertaken by PHG member, Chris Witt, he was told by the owners, Robinson’s of Stockport, that it was here when they acquired the pub back in 1929 from Kay’s Atlas Brewery of Ardwick, Manchester. Where it came from and when is unknown but was probably brought from a gentry house at some stage. Fanciful tales abound of it having been salvaged from ships, even, according to one version, from vessels in the Spanish Armada. This pub was one the National Inventory before but was removed owing to doubts about when the timberwork arrived. No that we know it was here well before the Second World War it seems only right to return it to the list. See the entry on the Heritage Pubs web site.

MANCHESTER, WITHINGTON, TURNPIKE, 520-522 Wilslow Road, M20 4BT. 0161 445 4565. A very different proposition from the Hawk, this Victorian pub was remodelled internally in the 1960s, and the Vault is a rare and very distinctive intact example of work of the time. The lounge, which was reworked at the time, was subsequently altered, but in 2002, Samuel Smith’s of Tadcaster who are such splendid guardians of pub heritage, returned it to its original 1960s state, even including the padded bar counter. Congratulations to them – to be able to see a pub with such a 1960s ensemble is rarer than when it comes to work of the Victorian, Edwardian or interwar periods. HERTFORDSHIRE, FLAUNDEN, GREEN DRAGON, HP3 0PP. 01442 832269. This becomes the only National Inventory pub in Hertfordshire and has been added for its simple, rustic right-hand room which retains its quarry-tiled floor, fixed benching and a baffle by the door. The date of the work is uncertain but might well go back to Victorian times. PHG is aware of a couple of post-war ‘flaws’, the rather crude hatch cut to the servery and the brick infill in the fireplace, but, overall, it was felt that such a basic, vernacular pub room, of which umpteen thousand must have existed in the countryside, is now so rare that it deserves Part Two recognition. Above the fireplace is a gun-rest for three guns, no doubt put to practical use by those about to go to or having come back from a shoot around this Chiltern village. A picture of locals listening to Churchill on the radio (in the above fireplace!) with varying degrees of attention can be found on the pub’s website www.greendragon.org.uk. DENBIGHSHIRE, LLANSANNAN, RED LION, High Street, LL16 5HG. 01745 870256. This pub has been added for its snug bar. It features a curved settle around a range fireplace with iron stays from the top of the settle to the beams above. Walk around the outside of the settle ands there is a hatch for service and some very old shelves for a bar back. Pub doubled in size in the 1960s when brewers Lees purchased the house next door – now a pool room. This pub offers B&B accommodation. See the entry on the Heritage Pubs web site.

OTHER NEWS

GLOUCESTERSHIRE, AMPNEY ST PETER, RED LION, Good news indeed. Andrew Frape, Chairman, Cirencester Sub-branch of CAMRA, reports that although the licensee, John Barnard, is still under observation in hospital (in a high-dependency ward) and won’t be seen at the pub for some while, his daughters have come to an agreement with a few of the locals (who will do the cellar work), and the pub will now be open, at least for the summer season. Opening times are Friday & Saturday evenings, 6-10pm. Sunday lunchtimes 12-2pm. If you haven’t been to this great rurual classic before, try to do so if you can – it’s wonderful and worth a goodly journey. See the entry on the Heritage Pubs web site.

CUMBRIA, CARLISLE, CUMBERLAND INN, Botchergate. 01228 818448. Mick Slaughter reports that the little-used upstairs bars at this 1920s pub – the most complete example surviving from the ‘Carlisle Experiment’ – have recently been converted into ‘Outpost Restaurant & Bar’, a separate business with access via the right hand front door and up the staircase. The restaurant is open Tue to Sun (and Bank Holiday Mon) from 5 to 10 (10.30 Fri, Sat); also Thu, Fri and Sat 12 to 2. See the entry on the Heritage Pubs web site.

GREATER LONDON, BARKINGSIDE, DOCTOR JOHNSON, Longwood Garden, IG5 0ES. News is just in that this intact, grade II-listed 1930s estate pub will be closing on 25 July as it is not making an adequate return. It’s unclear what the future may hold but if you don’t know this pub a visit over the next month is to be recommended. See the entry on the Heritage Pubs web site.
