The National Inventory

The National Inventory, or NI, lists those pub interiors which CAMRA regards as being in the “first division” when it comes to national pub preservation priorities. Work on it started in 1991 and it currently comprises 254 entries.

The National Inventory is in two parts:

Part One (189 entries) includes pubs whose interiors have remained wholly or largely intact since World War Two or, in some exceptional cases, up to 30 years ago.

Part Two (65 entries) covers interiors which, though altered to an extent, retain exceptional rooms or features which are of national historic importance. It also includes outstanding pub-type rooms in other kinds of establishment like hotels or station buffets.

The National Inventory can be accessed on this web site in a variety of ways:

The National Inventory is constantly evolving. Sadly, some pubs currently listed will either close or be ruined despite our best efforts to stop this. More happily, we continue to discover previously unreported interiors deserving inclusion.

CAMRA's Pub Heritage Group is always eager to hear from anyone who feels that a particular pub interior is worthy of consideration. Similarly, we need to know of any threat to an existing entry so that we can take what action we can.

Regional Inventories (RIs) are the next tier in the pub preservation hierarchy. They list, in addition to NI pubs in the area, those interiors which, whilst altered, still have significant historic or architectural value.

Four RIs have so far been published – for London, East Anglia, the North East and Scotland. You can purchase copies from the CAMRA bookshop. The RI for Yorkshire will be published during 2007 and by 2009 all the remaining RIs should be available. You can also view some RIs on this website.

If you have any updates or comments about these pubs or suggestions for pubs to be included in the CAMRA inventories please email info.pubheritage@camra.org.uk
