One of the truly great country classics, this thatched, whitened pub is named after an 1837 GWR locomotive, NOT the heavenly body. A timber porch with some fixed seating leads into the core of the pub, a room with three settles in the centre focusing on the fireplace - an extraordinary characterful survival. The few other known examples are the King's Head, Laxfield, Suffolk; Lord Nelson, Burham Thorpe, Norfolk; Crown, Snape, Suffolk; and the Red Lion, Llansannan, North Wales. Ironwork on the settles used to carry curtains for greater privacy and warmth. Quarry tile floor. The fire surround looks of the 1920s (modern brick infill) -here’s no bar counter: the main bar has service via a stable door from the ground floor cellar which also has a hatch to a second room at the side numbered '2' on the door. There is a plain further room (numbered 1) room across a corridor further back in the pub. Outdoor ladies’ and gents’.
