GLOUCESTERSHIRE - Purton, Berkeley Arms National Inventory of Historic Pub Interiors Part One , GL13 9HU (About 200 meters from Purton Lower Bridge, SO690045) Tel: (01453) 811262 Opening Hours: 7pm-10pm Mon-Fri; 12-2pm,7pm-10pm Sat and Sun Draught Beer & Cider: Real Ale Listed Status: Not listed Reached across the lift bridge over the Gloucester & Sharpness canal, this is a no-frills, simple rural pub. This completely unspoiled pub doubles up with a smallholding in the way that so many rural pubs did in times gone by. The red brick building has a long history. The central part was extended in the mid 19th century. The present arrangement of a tiny drinking area in front of a servery (with old counter and bar-back shelves) probably dates from Victorian times. On the left is a separate room with flagstone floor, large curved high-backed settle, large stone fireplace and a hatch to the side of the servery. The only recent change was the building of indoor toilets behind the room in the 1960s. This is one of few pubs left still selling pickled eggs so on your visit you could ask for a packet of crisps with a pickled egg in it while listening to golden oldies and drinking locally brewed Uley beer in a very traditional unspoilt pub and feel like you have been in a 40/50 year time-slip. Closed Mon to Fri lunchtimes and only open Sat lunchtime in summer. |
