GREATER MANCHESTER - Stockport, Alexandra National Inventory of Historic Pub Interiors Part One 195 Northgate Road, Edgeley, Stockport, SK3 9NJ Tel: 0161 476 0097 Listed Status: Grade II Built in 1911, the Alexandra is beautifully intact. Only the back bar and the outdoor department have been altered. The entrance hall with a hatch to the bar has a dado has glazed tiles with multi-coloured Art Nouveau motifs A room leads off each corner of the hall. The door surrounds have segmental pediments and each glazed door is etched with 'Tap Room', 'Smoke Room', 'Bar Parlour' etc. The rooms have fixed seating, lobby screens with coloured glass and original fireplaces, some with original Art Nouveau surrounds. The decoration continues up the stairs with an impressive coloured glass window on the half landing. A short corridor leads to an attached billiard room with exposed roof timbers and a painted glass skylight and a bay window with billiards etched in the glass. The listing description for this pub accurately and succinctly sums up with 'A good example of an early twentieth century public house which retains an elaborate interior with many original features.' |
